Egypt

Electricity Sector Restructuring Activity - US Agency for International Development - in May 1998, AEAI established offices in Cairo, Egypt to commence this electricity sector restructuring activity. AEAI is conducting this project with Deloitte Touche Tohmahtsu and International Resources Group. Egypt is undergoing significant transition on how its transmission and distribution operations will be managed and the level of privatization of its activities. This three year activity targets:

· Overall restructuring objectives and goals for Egyptian Electricity Authority ("EEA") and the government of Egypt

· Establishing board of directors for seven new power companies in country

· Completed information technology assessment and recommendations for new systems

· Complete Y2K assessment, vendor coordination, testing and validation and contingency planning for entire power sector

· Power pooling - operations, regulations, implementation

· Regulatory reform of the power sector included training of regulatory staff, information dissemination and establishing procedures for how regulations are reviewed, evaluated, issued and monitored

· Legal reform of EEA operations and role

· Debt and cash management

· Re-engineering

Middle East

Energy Sector Reform - United Nations Development Program (UNDP) - AEAI is currently working with the United Nations and the World Bank in Palestine, Syria and Egypt to promote energy sector reform, specifically through country-by-country "Energy Efficiency Improvement and Greenhouse Gas Reduction" programs. These programs target:

· Capacity building for key decision makers in government and the energy sector

· Public awareness and information campaigns for industry, commercial enterprises and individuals

· Promotion of production of energy efficiency equipment and materials.

Power and Energy Sector Review - U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) - AEAI is currently conducting a review of the power sector of several North African and Middle Eastern countries including: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Yemen for the purposes of promoting U.S. trade and investment in the region.
